The New Birth

Many preachers claim that if an unsaved person accepts Christ as their Savior, they have experienced the New Birth, or “born again”. However, can such a claim be justified in scripture?

I question this because of my own ‘New Birth’ experience (John 3:8). What happened at this time was that God placed a “new heart” within me (Ezek 36:26). This experience allowed me to “see” the state of God’s kingdom inside the churches, which to me was horrific.

Let me explain.

An analogy of the New Birth

A natural birth is a good basis upon which to appreciate how the New Birth occurs.

A natural birth requires a “seed” to fertilize the ‘egg’. Throughout the gestational period, the foetus grows to a point where it has to exit the womb if it wants to continue growing. At birth, it then enters into this hostile world so that it can ultimately develop to its full potential.

Similarly, the New Birth occurs, where:

  • The “seed” represents God’s words contained in scripture (Matt 13:23);

  • The “egg” represents the type of spiritual soil within the human heart – located inside our ‘Inner Man‘ (Matthew 13:8);

  • The ‘nourishment‘ that helps the fertilized ‘egg’ to grow into a fetus is Bible-based “Truth” (Psalm 119:105; 1 John 3:18);

  • The spiritual forces that try to ‘abort‘ this process are “false religious beliefs” (Gal 3:1);

  • If the unborn child of God overcomes these barriers, God arranges the New Birth — where once ‘born‘ as a ‘live birth’ into God’s kingdom, he or she should be able to see and report on what God has shown them in His kingdom (John 3:3).

Understanding more about the New Birth

Firstly, no one has any choice as to who their parents would be; their country of birth or what gender they might be prior to being born on Earth.  These choices were all made by our Creator—God the Father.

The Bible indicates He knew each of us prior to our natural birth. This is because He says He knew the Prophet Jeremiah before he was born into this world, as stated below—to which we can assume the same decision applies to us.

"Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, {5} BEFORE I FORMED THEE IN THE BELLY [of thy mother] I KNEW THEE..." ( (Jer 1:4-5))

The Bible says that God treats all people equally (Acts 10:34).

From the above verse it implies that He knew each of us before our parents conceived us. I understand that when the heart starts beating, it is at this point when God places our spirit into our foetus (1 Cor 2:11). At our birth, we then become a “living soul” (Gen 2:7 and Rev 16:3).

Moving from the world of the womb to this world is a “birth”. Moving from this world into the spiritual world where our Creator is requires the “New Birth” but the same experience (John 3:3-8)

Spirit-to-spirit communication

When Adam and Eve communicated with God and each other (Gen 3:8), they probably communicated with each other spirit-to-spirit. This is because scripture says the tongue is “set on fire of hell” (James 3:6).

Such (unholy) communication using the tongue with a holy God could not have happened.  Naturally, it is when an unsaved sinner hears the Gospel and ultimately becomes “born-again” that this spirit-to-spirit communication with God can be established.

More on being born-again

After Adam and Eve’s removal from the Garden of Eden – they were both cursed by God:

"Unto the woman he [God] said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." ( (Gen 3:16-19) )

As every woman suffers pain during childbirth and as every man has to earn his daily bread by the sweat of his brow (i.e. ‘work’), these facts indicate that every child which enters into this world is born with a curse upon them from God because of Adam and Eve’s sin.

This results in all children being rebellious towards their parents and towards God.  In this ‘fallen’ state, every child needs a ‘savior’ from their spiritual destiny of spending eternity in Hell for offending God.

The ‘Law’ and spiritual instruction

To eradicate ‘rebellion’ in the home, God requires all ‘natural’ fathers to teach their children to become good citizens (Prov 13:24). Sometimes this requires the use of discipline when necessary (Prov 13:24).

However, when a person has a “born-again” experience, it is the study of the scriptures that instructs God’s ‘born-again’ (spiritual children) on the earth (Psalm 23:3; Prov 12:28) to prepare for their next life with Jesus (2 Cor 5:8).

Wherefore THE LAW [i.e. the Ten Commandments] was OUR SCHOOLMASTER to bring us unto Christ, that we MIGHT be justified by faith." ( Gal 3:24 )_
But AFTER THAT FAITH IS COME, [at the New Birth] we are no longer under A SCHOOLMASTER.” (Gal 3:25 )

The above verses indicate that “faith” comes “AFTER” the lessons of ‘The Law’ have been learned.

Our Tongue is an Enemy of God

Once Adam and Eve could no longer communicate with God, they became “spiritually dead” towards Him (Gen 2:17 and Gen 3:3).  After realizing this, they then had to develop language skills by using their tongues—using that accursed little member found within each person’s body:

"Even so THE TONGUE is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! {6} And THE TONGUE IS A FIRE, A WORLD OF INIQUITY: so is the tongue among our members, that IT DEFILETH THE WHOLE BODY, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and IT IS SET ON FIRE OF HELL. {7} For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: {8} But the tongue can no man tame; IT IS AN UNRULY EVIL, FULL OF DEADLY POISON. {9} Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. {10} Out of the same mouth proceedeth BLESSING and CURSING. My brethren, these things ought not so to be." (James 3:5-10)

The “New Birth” has been designed by God to break the CURSE that Adam and Eve established between Him and us. The effect of this curse can be seen as rebellion that children often display against their parents (Gen 3:20).  The New Birth also aims to restore that intimate spirit-to-spirit level of communication between God and His children on earth that was broken in the Garden of Eden.

Being “Born-again” is a pre-requisite for Salvation

One of the most basic requirements for eternal Salvation is that of being “born-again”. More detail associated with the various stages of spiritual development can be seen in this article,

This article highlights how significant being truly “Born-again” is in God’s big scheme of establishing His kingdom on the Earth.

Spiritual restoration

Naturally, the preaching of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ reveals the path of spiritual restoration that God’s people must travel on. Another vital ingredient in achieving this goal is of having a LOVE of the TRUTH—no matter what it might reveal.

"…because they [the Christians in these Last Days] received not THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH, that they MIGHT BE SAVED." (2 Thes 2:10)

Please read the next post titled ‘The Significance of Loving Truth’.

This topic explains how this vital requirement of seeking, loving, embracing and speaking truth to everyone is a sure indicator that such a Christian is a child of the living God. It also indicates that such a person is in pursuit or has established their personal relationship with our Creator.

    1. Hello Paula – sorry for the delay but I have been out of town for a few days.

      Thanks for your comments and I think I can help you through the ‘maze’ of what is needed as spiritual “fruit” by God (John 15:1-8) and discovering what the ‘Narrow Way’ that leads to life is really like.

      Where you say, “my actions, ways and dreams (the nightime ones) are still quite worldly”, I would need a little more information from you to be able to comment on that.

      Maybe you could email me through my Contact form some more information about yourself and we can take it from there. https://mygospel.info/contact-form/

      Blessings Paula.

      Alan
